Covered or not

How most Idaho policies treat water

From Triple-I and the Idaho Department of Insurance. Your policy wording decides.

Usually covered

  • Burst pipes, wind-driven rain and ice-dam damage are typically covered.3
  • Water from above, such as rain or a burst sprinkler, is generally covered.3

Usually not, without extra cover

  • Flood: most policies will not cover it unless you bought that coverage separately.1
  • Sewer and drain backups, unless you added a backup rider.3
  • A new flood policy usually starts 30 days after purchase.4

How the claim usually runs

  1. Report promptly, and ask what the filing deadline is.1,5
  2. The insurer will typically send a company adjuster, who works for and is paid by the insurer, or an independent adjuster, whom you do not pay.1
  3. Before you meet the adjuster, have photos, receipts and a list of damaged items, plus written line-item bids from licensed contractors.5
  4. If you cannot stay in the house, ask about additional living expenses and keep the receipts.1
